The Crown Estate

Das Koenigreich gehoert natuerlich der Krone, wem auch sonst. Das Land zumindest. England, Wales und Northern Irland. Ja und nein. Strenggenommen ist in der Tat die Krone (nicht jedoch der jeweils regierende Monarch) Eigentuemerin des Landes. Theoretisch koennte also HM The Queen das Land unter meiner Wohnung fuer die Krone in Anspruch nehmen. Jederzeit. Tut sie natuerlich nicht, sie hat ja durchaus ein paar eigene netten Huetten zur Verfuegung und ausserdem ein, zwei andere Dinge zu tun.

Von diesem alles-meins-Prinzip mal abgesehen, besitzt die koenigliche Familie natuerlich eigenes Land und Immobilien. Der Erstgeborene (Prinz Charles) darf Spass mit der Duchy of Cornwall haben, Balmoral Castle und Sandringham House gehoeren der Queen, Buckingham Palace wiederum nicht, es ist wirklich alles ein wenig kompliziert und, mal ganz ehrlich, nicht so furchtbar wichtig. Sollen sie sich alle in irgendwelchen Schloessern von ihren Butlern bedienen lassen, nicht mein Problem.

Interessanter finde ich das ehemalige Eigentum: das Crown Estate ist ein Portfolio aus gewerblichen Immobilien und Land. Es hat nichts mit den Windsors zu tun, obwohl es sich Crown nennt, es gehoert nicht dem Staat, es war frueher im Besitz der jeweiligen Monarchen, aber dieser Tage werden alle Gewinne an den Staat abgefuehrt, es ist ein eigenstaendiges und unabhaengiges (naja) Gebilde und zur Zeit ungefaehr 6 Milliarden Stirlinge wert.

Die bekanntesten Gebaeude sind wohl die in Londons Regent Street. Wenn also z. B. Apple fuer den schicken Laden auf der Regent Street Miete bezahlt, dann kommt dieses Geld (nach Abzug der Kosten, versteht sich) dem UK taxpayer zugute. Laendereien in Schottland, Waldgebiete, das Portfolio ist vielfaeltig und gross.

Zum Crown Estate gehoert auch 55%, also mehr als die Haelfte des UK Uferlandes, genannt foreshore, das Land, was bei Niedrigwasser auftaucht und dann zu sehen ist. Seltsame Geschichte und nicht weiter wichtig moechte man meinen, aber wenn es um Fischereirechte, Durch- und Ueberfahrtsrechte und Hafenanlagen geht, erscheint das alles auf einmal in anderem Licht. Mehr als die Haelfte. Wer hier also an der Kueste im Wasser rumstapft, hat gute Chancen, das auf ehemals koeniglichem Privatbesitz zu tun. Naja, dafuer kriegen wir Steuerzahler pro Jahr ungefaehr £225 Millionen als Gegenleistung. Denn soviel haben die unheimlich wichtigen managers des Crown Estate letztes Jahr an Gewinn ruebergeschoben.

British Comedy!

British Comedy, so wie ich das sehe, jetzt, heute. Neue Talente tauchen auf, andere tauchen ab, konzentrieren sich auf andere Dinge, manche werden einfach zu bekannt, zu gross, zu beruehmt, Lee Evans als Beispiel. Ich habe den Mann mal verehrt. Andere wie Frank Skinner sind zurueckgekehrt zum guten stand-up, und Skinner ist immer noch kaum zu schlagen. Frankie Boyle ist beinhart, aber unglaublich gut, Ross Noble muss man moegen oder eben nicht, Bill Bailey koennte ich stundenlang zuhoeren usw usf, aber es soll jeder fuer sich selbst entscheiden. Oh, british, mit einer Ausnahme, jaaa, Dara O Briain ist natuerlich Irish (aber goettlich), und nixda Commonwealth, sonst wuerde es den Rahmen sprengen, keine bestimmte Reihenfolge, und ich habe sicher einige vergessen, und ja, es gibt es noch unglaublich viele andere brilliante stand-up comedians, und die clips sind auch nicht wirklich repraesentativ, ich weiss... leave your comments please... Ladies and Gentlemen, please put your hands together...

Die Familie Brunel

"Isambard Kingdom Brunel was one of the most versatile and audacious engineers of the 19th century, responsible for the design of tunnels, bridges, railway lines and ships."

So steht es geschrieben, also ist es wahr. 1806 in Portsmouth geboren war Brunel zunaechst mal Sohn von Marc Isambard Brunel, seines Zeichens Ingenieur, wie der Vater so der Sohn und, aehm, irgendwie halber Franzose. Weil der Vater eigentlich, Franzose und so, war, per Geburt, aber das vergessen wir mal schnell, geboren in Portsmouth, Brite, klare Sache.

Marc Isambard tat seinem Sohn einen grossen Gefallen, wie ich finde, als er ihm den Namen Isambard Kingdom gab. Das klingt doch prachtvoll, oder? Ich kann mich, was das angeht, nicht wirklich beschweren, ich weiss, aber Kingdom als zweiter Name? Ich nehme uebrigens natuerlich nur an, dass der Vater fuer den Namen verantwortlich zeichnete, ob die Ehefrau dazu etwas zu sagen hatte? Sicher nicht.

Wo war ich? Ingenieur, genau. Isambard Kingdom Brunel konstruierte bzw. war fuer den Bau oder das Design von unter anderem folgen Projekten zustaendig:

Nicht schlecht fuer jemanden, der 53 Jahre alt wurde, finde ich. Verflucht gut, um es mal klar zu sagen. Tunnel, dann halt ein paar Bruecken, Gottchen, kann ich auch mal Schiffe bauen.

Ich habe Burgen aus Legosteinen gebaut. Mit geheimen Raeumen unter Falltueren, na toll. Dann gab es noch die mit fischertechnik erschaffenen Kraene. Deren Statik oder wie man das nennt allerdings suchte ihresgleichen, oh yeah. Das war's dann aber auch.

Bis zu 40 Zigarren am Tag hat er angeblich geraucht, kein Wunder, dass der Schlag ihn traf, mit so viel Macht, dass er das Leben diesen begnadeten Menschen beendete. Und im wunderschoenen Kensal Green Cemetery findet man das eher bescheidene Familiengrab der Brunels.

Was steht wohl in ihrem Reisepass?

TOX

Der Mann ist bekannt als Londons beruehmtester tagger, und er hinterlaesst seine tags seit mindestens acht Jahren im gesamten Bereich der Tube. TOX, gefolgt vom Jahr, also TOX01, TOX02 usw. Die TOX tags hat so ziemlich jeder Londoner mal gesehen, der die Tube benutzt, denn obwohl Londer Underground ueber Jahre hinweg sicher hunderte davon beseitigt hat, sie tauchen immer wieder auf. TOX stand vor Gericht, er hat sich sicher soviele ASBOs eingefangen wie die Tube Beschwerden wegen Verspaetungen, seine Identitaet ist bekannt, sie ist im Netz publiziert worden. Ich bin mir nicht ganz sicher, aber ich meine sie haben ihm fuer endlose viele Jahre untersagt, auch nur das Wort tube zu sagen, geschweige denn, die Zuege oder Stationen zu betreten. Beim Londonist werden jedes Jahr die frischen tags dokumentiert, jetzt soll man sie sogar erwerben koennen.

Zum Thema Graffiti kann man sich sicher endlos die Koeppe einschlagen. Ich bin der Meinung, dass etwas Farbe auf einer Mauer nicht automatisch einer Straftat gleichzusetzen ist. Andererseits kann man argumentieren, dass TOX nie wirklich kuenstlerisch in Erscheinung getreten ist. Dann wiederum koennte man das permanente tagging von London Underground als Kunst bezeichnen.

Mir sind die tags schon vor Jahren aufgefallen, und das Modell 09 oben im Bild ist ziemlich frisch glaube ich.

The London Gazette

Ist sie es? Oder nicht? Von der London Gazette wird behauptet, sie sei "first daily newspaper in English language" und "world's oldest continuously published newspaper". Erste Ausgabe 7. November 1665, damals noch als Oxford Gazette, aktuelle Ausgabe, na heute eben, daily newspaper. Sort of. Allerlei Gesetzestexte werden publiziert, frueher eher Berichte ueber Ereignisse von historischer Wichtigkeit, Wirtschaftsdaten und dergleichen. Dieser Tage ist die London Gazette nur noch online erhaeltlich aber schon seit Jahrhunderten die vermutlich einzige Publikation, die verlegt wird von, hm, hoechster Wichtigkeit? Oder Autoritaet? Instanz? Kompetenz, sicher.

Drahtlos

Guglielmo Marconi wird dann doch gern mal als "Pionier der drahtlosen Kommunikation" als "Vater des Radios" bezeichnet. Dumm nur, dass Marconi erstens ein verdammter Faschist und zweitens mit grosser Wahrscheinlichkeit ein lausiger Dieb war, der einige Erfindungen z.B. von Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose weiterentwickelte und dann als seine eigenen verkaufte. Ganz egal, dachten sich irgendwelche Menschen bei BT, egal, es ist trotzdem angemessen, dieses Gedenkding aufzuhaengen. Und weil sie dies taten, fingen sie sich meine Aufmerksamkeit ein, als ich so nichtsahnend dem BT Gebaeude begegnete. Und waehrend ich zu Hause versuchte rauszufinden, wer den dieser komische Herr Marconi sei, fiel mir dann noch die Geschichte von den 25 angeblich seltsamen Todesfaellen ein. Aber als das passierte, also die Todesfaelle, da war Marconi schon lange Vergangenheit. Genau wie sein Kumpel Mussolini. Und wenn sich jemand gefragt hat, wie man Faschismus, drahtlose Kommunikation, British Telecom und conspiracy theories in einem Artikel erwaehnen kann, dem sei gesagt, es ist ganz einfach. Man muss nur die Newgate Street in London entlang schlendern. Alles uebrige kommt von allein, wie es so schoen heisst.
